Wild strawberries and raspberries lead the way on the nose, with sharp, savory notes of flint, soil and pepper providing balance. Those sanguine, peppery notes take center state on the palate, before a fresh, saline finish. Acid dances among a tangle of slippery tannins.

The Villa Matilde Avallone 2019 Aglianico Roccaleoni is priced at an entry-level position and offers accessible drinking with enough textural and aromatic support to accompany an oven-fresh flatbread pizza with burrata and tomato (and a few flakes of black truffle shaved over). The wine is redolent of ripe blackberry fruit, plum and sweet spice.
